Martin Scaia

Director

A skilled craftsman by trade, Martin has over 25 years of carpentry experience.

After completing a masters degree in environmental education, Martin's work at Green Island Builders was driven by his social and environmental commitment to his community and the world we share. He believes that working to a high standard of excellence is not only essential in leading a satisfying and rewarding life but that it is a critical part of meeting the personal and professional requirements of making a difference in contemporary society.

Naomi Reinhart | Project Manager

Naomi is a dedicated project manager with a passion for the impact of our surroundings on personal well-being. Trained in Project Management through VICA and The Project Management Institute, with specialized training in green building standards, she supports the creation of spaces that not only meet project objectives but also enhance the lives of those who inhabit them.

Originally from the prairies, Naomi has lived on Vancouver Island for the past 18 years, where she draws inspiration from the stunning natural surroundings, her love for travel and family.

Avery Gartner | Construction Manager

Avery comes to Green Island Builders with many years of experience in carpentry, design, coordination, and leadership. Avery’s passion for residential design and remodelling, combined with a specialty in finish carpentry, speaks to the work not only that he enjoyed for many years prior, but also to the work that he is currently doing in his role at Green Island Builders. Having been on the Island for a year now, Avery feels like it is home. He spends his off time enjoying hikes with his French Bulldogs, designing and building furniture and connecting with those close to him by having good conversations over tacos.

Caitlyn Bruce | People & Operations Manager

Caitlyn, an active member of CPHR BC & Yukon, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resource Management and Leadership, along with a Public Administration diploma. With exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills, she serves as a Green Island Builders’ People & Operations Manager. In addition to her professional role, Caitlyn actively contributes to her community while serving as a committee member for Living Wage for Families BC. With her academic pursuits and diverse experiences, Caitlyn emerges as a committed individual and passionate advocate, dedicated to fostering organizational culture, prioritizing wellbeing, and establishing inclusive work environments for minority groups.

Michael Jarabelo | Estimator

Michael, hailing from the Philippines, boasts extensive cost-estimating expertise garnered during his tenure in Dubai, UAE. Armed with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, he is currently pursuing a Diploma in Business Administration at the University of Victoria. In the realm of cost estimation, Michael abides by the humorous yet insightful words of Sherman Kent: "Estimating is what you do when you don't know."

Wendy Taylor | Design & Development Coordinator

Wendy obtained her degree in interior design from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, where she received the IDIBC Student Award of Excellence for her repurposing project, the MR Evans Award for Environmental Consideration, and two Leadership Awards. After graduation, she obtained her LEED Professional accreditation. Since then, Wendy has worked in different areas of design, including corporate and commercial work and residential design, which she finds the most rewarding. Wendy’s travels have taken her through Europe, Asia, Central America and South America, giving her a well-rounded appreciation for many design styles. Wendy understands that the West Coast has become a cultural and social melting pot with diverse architectural and design influences and embraces the challenge of fusing these influences with West Coast style.

Kaan Cansiz | Bookkeeper

Kaan was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey. He attended Istanbul Bilgi University and then Camosun College, studying international trade and then business in Istanbul and accounting in Victoria. He has worked as an accounting manager for Lighthouse Brewing and also, previously worked for the BC Regional Council of Carpenters. In his spare time, he enjoys running, cooking, and spending time with friends and family. Fun fact: he has a food blog and loves coffee.

Ciaron Driscoll | Red Seal Carpenter

Ciaron has spent the last six years working in construction in Vancouver and Victoria. From milling salvaged trees with his Alaskan chainsaw mill, to renovations and fine finishing, he enjoys the daily problem solving that comes with each new job, and the satisfaction of the finished product. When he’s not at work, he’s spend my time biking, running, and trying to tire out his dog.

Sara Gallinger | Apprentice

Sara grew up in the Ottawa area and ventured to the east coast for her education at a small university. Summers were spent tree planting in Northern BC, where her love of hands on work took root. Her dream of working in the trades led her to Victoria, where she enrolled in the Fine Furniture and Joinery program. Here, she cultivated a keen eye for detail and a genuine passion for building. Currently, Sara is a second-year apprentice at Green Island Builders, where each day presents a new opportunity to learn and create. Outside of work, you'll find her engaged in creative pursuits, exploring the outdoors, and enjoying quality time with her giant dog, Juno!

Jess Loyst (Bones) | Apprentice

Outside of Green Island Builders, Jess is a lover of the outdoors. Her best times are spent hiking and being in the nurture of nature. She loves spending quality time with her partner and fur baby. Fun Fact: She is also a musician that plays in a band and writes music!

Megan Duffy | Design Support Specialist

Megan loves everything about residential design from space planning, to research, to material sourcing. Striking the right balance between aesthetics and the practical needs of her clients feeds her curiosity. A different challenge every day, and the chance to work with her hands, sparks her creativity. She majored in Interior Design at Vancouver Island University’s CIDA-certified 4-year program. 

While at VIU she was the captain of the VIU Women’s Volleyball team leading the team to a National Champion Title in 2022. From Toronto, she fell in love with island life when she was 18. Swimming, and being surrounded by nature, brings her joy. Her favourite summer spots are the Nanaimo River and Tofino. 

David Bradford | Apprentice

David loves framing. Seeing the result of his critical and creative thinking is one of the most satisfying things about his work. He has a deep appreciation for carpentry. Previously a weightlifting coach and landscaper, he focused on carpentry when he moved to the island. He has completed his Level 1 Apprenticeship at Camosun and is looking forward to expanding his experience into finishing. David enjoyed being part of the entire process at Parry Cross Road.

His passion for exploration has taken him from Texas, to Colorado, to Calgary, to Vancouver Island. He loves walking his dog Bodhi on Dallas Road, enjoys Jordan River, and is grateful to live in such a beautiful place.

Dave Taylor | Site Lead

Dave has over 30 years of experience in the construction industry. Before joining Green Island Builders he managed custom residential new builds in Vancouver. He enjoys reminiscing about his early forays into business including his experience as door-to-door encyclopedia salesman and managing a restaurant in Banff. Dave has always been an avid cyclist, loves exploring the outdoors and experiencing nature's curiosities such as rain shadows. In university he majored in Environmental Design. He loves mentoring and teaching carpenter apprentices while encouraging them to become thoughtful builders. He loves the Parry Cross Road project which offered him and the team lots of opportunities to think outside the box.

Antonio Gissi | Project Coordinator

Antonio Gissi is originally from Sydney, Australia, and has over 10 years of experience as a Carpenter/Builder. He trained at TAFE, New South Wales, where he earned his Certificates I, II, III, & IV in Carpentry, Building, and Construction. As GIB’s Project Coordinator he brings his deep expertise to lead subcontractors and own project schedules, ensuring tasks are completed on time. He enjoys working with his hands, cooking and problem solving. He is a surfing and hiking/trail running enthusiast, and his favourite spot on the island is Mount Washington. The Castlerock house on Fairfield Rd, which gave him a number of satisfying creative challenges, is his favourite project.
